A 14days photography journey in western Sichuan changes rhythm constantly. One morning we may be standing beneath a damp forest canopy; later the road climbs toward conifers, alpine scrub and snow-covered ridges.
For us, that change of habitat is part of the photography. We look into trees for golden monkey,red panda, scan forest edges for larger mammals and keep checking open ridges for mountain birds. Sometimes the animal is there but the photograph is not—branches cross the frame, mist thickens, or the subject disappears before the camera is ready.
Then, without much warning, everything can come together. The light opens for a few seconds. An animal pauses in the right place. A bird settles against a clean mountain background. Those brief moments are what the long drives and quiet waiting are for.
Looking back at the photographs, we usually remember more than the subject. We remember cold fingers, wet boots, the sound of a forest waking up and the sudden excitement when someone quietly says, ‘There.’
That is why we like photographing western Sichuan this way. The goal is not to rush from species to species. It is to spend enough time in the mountains for the wild side of the landscape to reveal itself on its own terms.
