Ya’an and Western Sichuan

Laba River Nature Reserve (often called Labahe) is a lush mountain landscape near Ya’an, with forested valleys, bamboo-rich understory, and a gentler travel rhythm than remote plateau routes.

For Absolute Panda journeys, the reserve is especially meaningful as red panda habitat. It also supports a wider forest community, including Chinese goral, deer, pheasants, macaques, martens, and a strong mix of mountain birds.

The experience is not about rushing from one viewpoint to another. Laba River works best when days are shaped around patient walks, forest edges, and repeated time in promising habitat—often in mist, soft light, and quiet woodland.
