We reached Jiuzhaigou early, before the valleys felt fully awake. The air was cool, the mountains were still holding a little mist, and the first lake we saw was so clear that the trees seemed to continue beneath the water.
We had seen photographs before, but the colors were different in person. Turquoise, deep blue and green shifted with the light, while fallen trunks rested quietly below the surface. We walked between lakes and waterfalls, stopping more often than we expected.
At Five Flower Lake, we stayed longer than planned. It was one of those places where taking another photo did not really help. We simply stood there and watched the water change as clouds moved across the valley.
The next morning, Huanglong felt completely different.
The road climbed higher, the air became thinner, and we naturally slowed down. Above the forest, terraces of pale limestone held hundreds of shallow pools. Some looked blue, others green or almost golden depending on the light.
By the time we reached the higher section, we could feel the altitude. That made us appreciate the landscape even more. There was no reason to hurry.
Jiuzhaigou impressed us with its scale and color. Huanglong felt quieter and more delicate.
What stayed with us most was how different the two places were, even though they sit in the same corner of Sichuan. We came for the famous scenery. We left remembering the cold air, the sound of water, and all the moments when we stopped walking because the view in front of us was enough.
