From the Journey
Day 1
Upon arrival in Chengdu, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely visit to either Wangjianglou Park, with its bamboo groves and traditional tea houses, or Kuanzhai Alley, a historic Qing Dynasty neighborhood filled with local culture, handicrafts, and Sichuan snacks. Gather for a welcome dinner in the evening and prepare for the botanical adventure ahead.
Day 2
Visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding early in the morning to observe Giant Pandas and Red Pandas during their most active hours while learning about conservation efforts. After lunch, drive to Baoxing, the place where both the Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and the Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) were first introduced to Western science.
Day 3
Ascend Jiajin Mountain, passing from evergreen forests to alpine meadows rich in wildflowers. Search for Meconopsis punicea, Meconopsis integrifolia, Meconopsis lancifolia, Lilium lophophorum, Primula species, and Cypripedium tibeticum while enjoying spectacular mountain scenery and traditional Tibetan villages along the route.
Day 4
Spend the day exploring Mengbi Mountain, visiting picturesque Jiarong Tibetan villages and searching for botanical highlights including Primula palmata, Dolomiaea souliei, and Boschniakia himalaica. Keep an eye out for birds such as Laughingthrushes (Garrulax), Rosefinches (Carpodacus), and Nuthatches (Sitta) before continuing to Barkam.
Day 5
Travel from the mountains to the vast Ruoergai Grassland and wetlands, where alpine meadows bloom with seasonal wildflowers. Watch for Black-necked Crane, Ruddy Shelduck, Skylark, birds of prey, and herds of grazing yaks against the beautiful plateau landscape before arriving in Ruoergai.
Day 6
Leave Ruoergai and travel toward Huanglong National Scenic Area. Along the way, stop at Chuanzhusi and cross Xuebaoding Pass, searching for alpine flowers including Meconopsis henrici, Meconopsis punicea, Meconopsis integrifolia, and Primula stenocalyx. On clear days, enjoy magnificent views of Xuebaoding Peak.
Day 7
Spend the day exploring the spectacular travertine pools and forests of Huanglong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ride the cable car to the upper valley and walk downhill while searching for remarkable orchids including Cypripedium flavum, Cypripedium bardolphianum, Cypripedium tibeticum, Calanthe delavayi, Calypso bulbosa, and Orchis chusua.
Day 8
Continue through Danyun Gorge, searching for Cypripedium sichuanense, Calanthe alpina, and Oreorchis fargesii before visiting the historic Qingxi Ancient Town. Arrive at Tangjiahe Nature Reserve in the evening, with opportunities to spot Tufted Deer (Elaphodus cephalophus) and Sichuan Takin (Budorcas taxicolor tibetana) along the roadside.
Day 9
Spend a full day exploring one of China's finest wildlife reserves. Search for Sichuan Takin, Golden Pheasant, Tibetan Macaque, Reeves's Muntjac, Chinese Goral, Chinese Serow, and Wild Boar, while enjoying the reserve's rich forests and mountain scenery. In the late afternoon, transfer to Golden Monkey Nature Reserve.
Day 10
Explore Golden Monkey Nature Reserve in search of the charismatic Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. The mixed mountain forests also support beautiful wildflowers including Rhododendron, Primula, Cypripedium orchids, Pedicularis, and many other alpine species depending on the season. After lunch, return to Chengdu for a farewell dinner celebrating the expedition's botanical and wildlife discoveries.
Day 11
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a short transfer to the nearby airport for your departure flight.
This expedition involves regular outdoor activities including forest walks, mountain trails, alpine meadows, and nature reserve exploration. A moderate level of fitness and good mobility are recommended. Some locations involve high elevations and uneven terrain, but the pace remains flexible according to weather conditions, wildlife activity, and participants’ interests.
The itinerary gradually ascends from Chengdu into the high mountains and Tibetan Plateau, with some areas reaching elevations above 3,000 meters. Participants should allow time to acclimatize and inform the team of any altitude-related concerns. The itinerary is designed with gradual elevation changes to provide a comfortable experience.
Layered clothing is recommended as temperatures vary significantly between valleys and high-altitude areas. Comfortable hiking shoes, waterproof outer layers, sun protection, and warm clothing are essential. A good pair of binoculars and a camera are highly recommended for wildlife and botanical observation.
