Travel from the Tibetan Plateau to the subtropical forests of western Yunnan, photographing winter birds, rare primates, ancient towns, and minority culture with a specialist photography guide. The route combines patient field sessions at Napahai, Baihualing, Gaoligongshan, and Yingjiang with cultural stops in Shangri-La, Lijiang, and Dali.

From the Journey
Day 1
Arrive in Shangri-La and meet your AbsolutePanda guide for a smooth airport transfer. Depending on arrival time, take a gentle first look at the city before gathering for a welcome dinner and an introduction to Yunnan cuisine.
Day 2
Begin at Napahai Lake, where winter wetlands and grasslands attract cranes, geese, raptors, and other highland birds. Continue to Songzanlin Monastery to photograph its Tibetan-Han architecture, then drive about 150km to the Black Snub-nosed Monkey Nature Reserve.
Day 3
Spend the morning searching for black snub-nosed monkeys and high-elevation forest birds. After the field session, travel about 180km to Lijiang, where preserved lanes, Naxi culture, and traditional architecture offer a softer cultural close to the day.
Day 4
Travel through Heqing, using its springs and wetlands for relaxed waterbird photography. Continue to Dali, framed by Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake, with time to experience the character of the ancient town and the traditions of the Bai people.
Day 5
Explore the higher forest roads of Cangshan National Geopark, looking for Lady Amherst’s Pheasant and other mountain birds among varied mid-elevation habitats. Later, drive about 320km west to Baihualing at the edge of the Gaoligong Mountains.
Day 6
Spend a full day photographing birds in Baihualing, where the steep elevation range and seven vegetation zones create one of Yunnan’s richest biodiversity areas. Winter brings many species to lower elevations and into mixed flocks, improving opportunities from forest paths and established bird blinds.
Day 7
Return to the Baihualing blinds for another morning of focused photography, with possible pheasants, partridges, laughingthrushes, babblers, and forest thrushes. In the afternoon, drive about 100km to the Gaoligongshan Natural Park area.
Day 8-9
Use two full days to explore Gaoligongshan Natural Park, allowing time to listen, wait, and search for Skywalker hoolock gibbons in their forest habitat. Other possible mammals include Phayre’s leaf-monkey, stump-tailed macaque, Bengal slow loris, and black giant squirrel, with rewarding bird photography between mammal searches.
Day 10
Continue photographing birds in Gaoligongshan during the morning, with possibilities ranging from pheasants and barbets to woodpeckers and forest raptors. Then travel about 300km toward Yingjiang, adding a stop at Hongbenghe or Xiniao Valley when time allows.
Day 11
Photograph birds around Yingjiang, where tropical and subtropical habitats near the Myanmar border support extraordinary diversity. After the morning field session, drive about 80km to Tengchong for the final overnight of the journey.
Day 12
Enjoy a calm final morning before your guide escorts you to Tengchong Airport and assists with luggage check-in. The AbsolutePanda journey concludes with onward travel from western Yunnan.
This is a 12-day overland photography route with early field starts, uneven forest paths, bird-blind sessions, altitude changes from about 860m to 3,300m, and driving days of up to roughly 5.5 hours.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Winter generally brings birds to lower elevations and into mixed flocks, but successful photography still depends on patience, weather, light, and animal movement.
The journey begins at 3,300m in Shangri-La and includes several mountain locations. Accommodation is based on three-star hotels in larger cities and the best available local guesthouses in smaller areas, normally with twin sharing.
