Travel from Yushu across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau into the vast wilderness of Hoh Xil, where Tibetan antelope, wild yak, kiang, Tibetan foxes, brown bears, and other plateau wildlife roam beneath snow-capped mountains. After focused photography in the reserve, descend to Golmud and continue through desert landscapes to Qinghai Lake before ending in Xining.

From the Journey
Day 1
Arrive in Yushu, where your guide and driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Keep the day deliberately gentle, allowing time to rest, adjust to the 3,700-metre elevation, and prepare equipment and logistics for the plateau journey ahead.
Day 2
Ease into the safari with flexible photography excursions around Yushu while continuing to acclimatize. Search lower plateau habitats for Tibetan foxes, wolves, Himalayan griffons, plateau pikas, and Himalayan marmots, then add a cultural visit to a Tibetan monastery or another nearby site as conditions allow.
Day 3
Drive approximately 230km toward Qumalai, using the journey as a moving wildlife search across broad grasslands and mountain slopes. Possible subjects include white-lipped deer, brown bears, kiang, black-necked cranes, and golden eagles, alongside the landscapes and nomadic culture of this predominantly Tibetan region.
Day 4
Set out early for the long drive into Hoh Xil, continuing to scan the roadside for white-lipped deer and other plateau wildlife. As the route enters one of China’s largest and most remote protected landscapes, look for wild yak, Tibetan antelope, kiang, brown bears, Tibetan gazelles, and plateau pikas.
Day 5
Spend the first full day exploring the immense open landscapes of Hoh Xil with an experienced local wildlife team. Follow animal movement and changing light in search of Tibetan antelope, wild yak, kiang, Tibetan gazelles, and Tibetan foxes, allowing time to work patiently for clean backgrounds and natural behaviour.
Day 6
Use the morning for one final search in Tangjiahe before leaving the reserve. In the afternoon, continue to Pingwu, where the high mountain forests support an important population of Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys living within the wider giant panda landscape.
Day 7
Leave the reserve and drive approximately 370km toward Golmud, continuing to watch for kiang, Tibetan gazelles, blue sheep, and other conspicuous mammals along the road. Reaching the lower elevation of Golmud brings a welcome change of pace and a more comfortable hotel after several nights in remote plateau country.
Day 8
Travel approximately 660km toward the Qinghai Lake region on a long but visually varied overland day. Cross desert landscapes, pause around wooded patches where wildlife may be present, and photograph the distinctive meeting of dry terrain, cultivated areas, and distant mountains before arriving in Gangcha.
Day 9
Spend the morning beside Qinghai Lake searching the narrow grassland habitat of the endangered Przewalski’s gazelle. After the photography session, continue to Xining; when timing permits, visit Ta’er Monastery for a final cultural perspective on Tibetan Buddhism and the human landscapes of Qinghai.
Day 10
Enjoy a calm final morning before your guide transfers you to Xining Airport for your onward flight. The AbsolutePanda journey concludes with assistance at departure.
The journey begins around 3,700m and includes nights near 4,500m. Arrive well rested, consult your doctor before travel, and follow the guide’s gradual acclimatization plan and safety advice.
All wildlife encounters are unpredictable. Wild giant pandas are especially difficult to see, while red panda, golden monkey, takin, plateau mammal, and snow leopard searches require patience, repeated scanning, and flexibility around weather and local information.
Wildlife sightings and photographic distance can never be guaranteed. Long lenses are useful, but safe distance always takes priority around wild yak, wolves, brown bears, and other large mammals; guides may use the vehicle as a secure viewing position.
