This 10-day program is designed for travelers who want to move beyond panda-base viewing and understand how giant pandas live in the wild. After a visit to Bifengxia Panda Base, the journey continues into Panda Habitat for several days of guided hiking with a wildlife guide and local ranger. The focus is on reading the forest carefully: bamboo, droppings, scent marks, tracks, bird calls, and the animals that share the same mountain ecosystem, from Sichuan takin and golden snub-nosed monkey to pheasants, macaques, goral and other forest species.

Day 2
Bifengxia Panda Base and Transfer to Panda Habitat
Travel from Chengdu to Ya’an for a morning visit to Bifengxia Panda Base, a quieter panda site in a natural mountain setting. Continue to the Panda Habitat and use the drive to learn about wild panda ecology, field signs and the companion animals of the upcoming tracking days.
Day 3-9
Panda Habitat Tracking and Mountain Wildlife Exploration
Spend six focused days hiking in the Panda Habitat with your wildlife guide and local ranger. Search for panda signs such as bamboo feeding traces, droppings, scent marks and tracks while also looking for companion wildlife including Sichuan takin, golden snub-nosed monkey, Tibetan macaque, goral, pheasants, muntjac and other forest species.
Day 10
Depart from Chengdu
Enjoy a calm final morning before your guide and driver escort you to the airport for departure.

Wild Panda Expectations
Wild panda sightings are rare and never guaranteed. The journey focuses on reading panda habitat, searching for signs, and understanding the wider ecosystem where pandas live.
Physical Demand
Most field days involve hiking in mountain forests, often in cold winter or early-spring conditions. Travelers should be comfortable with active days and uneven terrain.
Access & Conservation Rules
Tracking follows permitted routes with local guidance. Current restrictions around the Giant Panda National Park mean the trip cannot go deep into panda habitat as earlier programs once could.
